The company uses biogas from the largest sanitary landfill in Puerto Rico to generate renewable natural gas in the city of Humacao. It is the first project of its kind in that country and in the Caribbean.

Puerto Rico made renewable natural gas for the first time with technology from Galileo Technologies

Galileo Technologies provided a comprehensive renewable liquefied natural gas (RLNG) plant located in Puerto Rico. This will supply RLNG to industrial clients for electricity generation in their cogeneration systems (CHP). The project is the first source of domestic natural gas generated on the island.

The plant was put into operation to carry out the conditioning and liquefaction process. There, some 3,000 SCFM of landfill gas (LFG) will be processed daily to produce 20,000 gallons per day. This will be distributed as liquefied natural gas (LNG) to displace the expensive consumption of imported LNG in private cogeneration plants. In this sense, the Puerto Rico liquefaction facility will be removing 27,090 tons of CO2 per year from the atmosphere, which is equivalent to the CO2 removed by 4515 hectares in a year.

In its LFG treatment stage, the plant has a CSM upgrading station, connected to the landfill, to remove a majority of the carbon dioxide (CO2), volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and H2S – and an additional ZPTS® station to remove residual CO2 and moisture, upgrading the RNG to liquefaction quality. Already converted into RNG or biomethane, the gas is then liquefied by two Cryobox® LNG Production Stations and later stored in stationary storage containers.  In the cryogenic process the N2 is removed.  This LNG will then be loaded onto cryogenic trailer units for distribution within the island.

“The possibility of helping Puerto Rico to produce its own biomethane or RNG was what attracted us to this project from the beginning. We work very close to BGF to support this project, understanding that an island environment has its own project challenges”, affirm Ronald J. Foster, North American President and COO at Galileo Technologies.

“We are proud to announce that we are pioneers in renewable natural gas generation in Puerto Rico. Our engineering team has faced key challenges in considering specific design criteria for the island. Also, our commissioning team planned and executed the plant start-up swiftly and safely, which guaranteed the project’s success”, added María de La Orden Cash, Sr Project Developer at Galileo Technologies.
